Romantic Night Shoot in Chinatown: Lanterns & Love

Couple photoshoot in Chinatown Los Angeles

Looking for a romantic and unique couple’s photoshoot idea in Los Angeles? Chinatown at night is the perfect location, combining the charm of its historic architecture with the vibrant lights of the city after dark. The neons, and lantern-lined walkways create an atmosphere that’s both intimate and cinematic—a dream for any couple looking to capture their love story in a one-of-a-kind setting.

When I was approached for this session, I couldn’t have been more excited. I’ve been exploring more night photography lately and knew Chinatown would give us the perfect mix of glowing lights and vibrant colors. Plus, I had some low-light film for my 35mm camera that I’d been saving for the right moment. Everything about this shoot felt like it came together seamlessly, and it turned out even better than I imagined.

Starting the Night Under the Lanterns

We kicked off the evening beneath Chinatown’s iconic red lanterns. The lanterns cast a warm, romantic glow, immediately setting the tone for the session. These two could not have felt more natural in front of the camera. Laughing and holding hands as if my camera and weren’t even there. It’s moments like these that make my job so rewarding—capturing love in its most authentic form.

The lantern-lined streets offered an endless array of backdrops. One of the first shots I captured was of them cuddling up on a lamp post, while the lanterns covered the entire backdrop with a glowing atmosphere. It was a simple moment but felt so cinematic with the colors and textures of the setting.

Exploring the Vibrant Streets

We wandered around the entire Chinatown Business District, finding some perfect spots to frame the sparks that were between these two. A neon-lit burger stand and this glowing red door made for some of my favorite scenes of the shoot. Also since it was a weeknight, a lot of the shops had just closed, making for a pretty quiet scene. At times we basically had the entire place to ourselves. Each corner we turned felt like discovering a new story waiting to be told.

We also experimented with motion, capturing playful shots of them walking hand in hand under the lights. The energy was infectious, and you could see their connection in every movement. Chinatown’s streets offered the perfect mix of lively and intimate moments, making it easy to create a gallery full of variety.

The Magic of Shooting After Dark

Night photography can be tricky, but when its done right, it's so worth it. Chinatown’s lighting—between the lanterns, neon signs, and reflections— offered the perfect playground for creating the most incredible night-time vibe and added a whole extra layer of excitement to this shoot.

I love how photos at night have that timeless, cinematic feel, almost like you're watching a scene from a movie. The way light and shadow play off each other creates a mood that’s hard to get during the day. For this session, I used a mix of digital and film cameras to really capture all the different textures and tones, giving the final images even more depth.

Why Chinatown is Perfect for Couple’s Photos
